BEVERLY R. DOBSON

1927 - 2020

BEVERLY DOBSON was a native Californian who grew roses in Westchester County, New York for twenty-six years before returning to California in 1994. She began publishing rose information in the 1970s and founded the Combined Rose List in 1980. She was a rose enthusiast with experience as an American Rose Society Accredited Judge and Consulting Rosarian, an author, editor, and presenter of slide programs. The first American honorary vice-president of Britain's Royal National Rose Society, she was the recipient of the Silver Honor Medal from the New York State District of the American Rose Society in 1981, a former Secretary-Treasurer of the Rose Hybridizers Association , and Secretary of the Heritage Roses Group. Her many publications include the rose chapter in the Fourth Edition of 10,000 Gardening Questions Answered by 20 Experts, and the rose section in the Wise Garden Encyclopedia. From 1983-1994 she published the widely acclaimed Bev Dobson's Rose Letter.


PETER SCHNEIDER is a rose collector, importer and exhibitor who began editing the Combined Rose List  in partnership with Bev Dobson in 1992. He is an accredited rose judge who is active in his local rose society. He is the author of Right Rose, Right Place; Peter Schneider on Roses; and of the rose essay in Taylor's Guide to Seashore Gardening, and the editor of the revised edition of Taylor's Guide to Roses. His essay about the rose 'Corylus' was anthologized in Roses: A Celebration. A regular contributor to Horticulture, he has also contributed to The Gardener, National Gardening and numerous other publications. With his wife Susan he grows about 1,300 different varieties of roses at Freedom Gardens, their homestead in rural Portage County, Ohio. Their garden is open to the public on Sundays each June.
